“It’s just me and the dog.”

I glance down and notice his wedding ring.

His quiet, tired voice. His worn hands.

I have little to say, but I listen, and I listen.

A few months later he returns;

A year later, again.

I listen close.

I notice now,

His ring is replaced by a laugh.
