Anastomoses is a literary magazine that celebrates the unique talents of individuals within the medical community, as well as hopes to expand upon the emerging fields of the medical humanities and narrative medicine. Anastomoses publishes works of fiction/non-fiction, poetry, visual art, music, and video created by students, staff, and faculty. The goals of the magazine are to provide an outlet for creative energy in the UConn medical and dental communities as well as to advocate for the strong relationship between the humanities and health care. While we serve the UConn community, Anastomoses is not affiliated with UCHC.

The term “anastomosis” is an anatomical term derived from the Greek language. Anastomosis is defined as “the union of parts or branches (as of streams, blood vessels, or leaf veins) so as to intercommunicate or interconnect.” It is a phenomenon that represents communication and connection of things that are typically diverging in nature. These anastomoses, or junctions of convergence, can be both naturally occurring or be surgically created. It is our hope that the Anastomoses Literary Magazine may serve as a platform for such communications across the medical field, and that providers, patients, students, civilians, teachers and caregivers alike may share their experiences and insight onto what health and medicine means to them.
