This short poem reflects on the journey of a person who has undergone a kidney transplant due to cystinosis, a rare disease who I interviewed. It emphasizes the importance of self-preservation and caring for the individual beyond the success or failure of the graft. While the transplant brings hope, there is acknowledgment of the uncertainty surrounding graft acceptance by the host. However, the focus remains on nurturing the person's spirit and providing love and support. The triumph of the kidney transplant is celebrated, but the poem reminds us that caring for the individual's well-being is paramount. Self-preservation is highlighted as a thriving force, leading to restoration and resilience.

Transplant's gift, self-preservation's might,

CKD challenged, courage takes flight.

Awaiting graft's grip before time slips away,

Navigating the uncertainty, hope lights the way.

Graft's uncertain path, host's embrace we seek,

Empowering their journey, hope's beacon we speak.

Kidney's triumph celebrated, the surgeon’s reward,

Self-preservation thrives, striking a chord.

Patient’s triumph uplifted; a new path scripted.
