When a tree falls

Everyone hears it

How can you miss the thunderclap

Of cracking wood and whistling branches

As they meet the ground for the first time

The sudden flap of wings signal an early eviction

When a tree falls

Everyone feels it

Splinters piercing skin

To make new wounds from old injuries

Roughened edges scrape the earth

Like week old stubble on cotton sheets

When a tree falls

Everyone sees it

A vacant spot against the sky

Invites the sun to bake the left side of the porch

Your favorite place to sit

Now ruined by the downfall of your tallest friend

And they say it doesn’t make a sound
